Tapestry Art & Talent
Labor Day Weekend 2002
San Jose, CA
Shall We Dance- San Jose Mounted Police
San Jose's Tapestry in Talent began with its first arts festival in 1976 as part of the country's bicentennial celebration and continued annually with the Tapestry Arts Festival each Labor Day Weekend. The festival was a three-day celebration of the visual and performing arts held on the streets of downtown San Jose. Revenue from the festival provided seed money to bring arts outreach to neighborhoods and arts education to local schools. The festival was for many years the City's largest fundraising event for arts education.
I was a photography teacher for Tapestry Arts for several years until they closed in 2010 during the great recession.
The Mounted Police unit relied on private money to supplement its budget for several years. The unit was eliminated in 2011 during the Great Recession.

"San Jose had mounted police in one capacity or another since 1911, but it wasn't until 1986 that this special Horse Mounted Unit was formed to increase police presence in the downtown. The unit consisted of 12 horses on active duty and two in training, 11 mounted officers, two sergeants and a civilian trainer."
