Naval Training Station, Senior Officers’ Quarters District

Yerb Buena Island, San Francisco, CA Photographs 2024

Yerba Buena Island was a crucial element of the Senior Officers’ Quarters District, serving as a short-lived but vital training station from 1898 to 1923. Despite its brief operational period, Yerba Buena Island was pivotal in establishing a modern American naval presence on the West Coast. It swiftly became a critical maritime training station, one of four similar facilities. Even after its decommissioning in 1923, the island remained significant in military presence. The Senior Officers’ Quarters District, concentrated around Quarters 4, is a historical focal point, representing the primary collection of buildings on the island from that era. The district is a notable example of residential military architecture from that time.
